Scholarship opportunities in Sustainable Aquaculture and Marine Sustainable Development

Shanghai Ocean University (SHOU), China, is offering 20 full scholarship places in each of two programmes as part of its Shanghai Summer School 2026. The programmes are open to outstanding international students, researchers, and professionals. Both programs will be held at SHOU's Lingang Campus. Tuition will be in English.

Shanghai Ocean University is a national "Double First-Class" institution specialising in aquaculture, fisheries, and marine science. It is co-established by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, the Ministry of Natural Resources, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

Programme 1: Sustainable Aquaculture Program (14 June - 2 July 2026)

Hosted by the College of Fisheries and Life Sciences, this programme focuses on sustainable aquatic resource use and management. It combines expert lectures on the latest advances in aquaculture with seminars, debates, field visits to aquaculture enterprises, and practical skills training. The programme draws on China's experience as the world's largest aquaculture producer and aims to build international knowledge exchange in the field.

Who can apply

  • Non-Chinese citizens in good health
  • Senior undergraduates, graduate students (Master's/PhD), or young scholars and technicians in fisheries, marine science, biology, or environmental science
  • English proficiency required for oral and written communication
  • Applicants from Belt and Road Initiative countries and nominees of partner institutions receive priority

Programme 2: Marine Sustainable Development Program (28 May - 13 June 2026)

Language: Chinese (beginner-friendly) with full English support

Hosted by the College of Foreign Languages, this programme integrates Chinese language learning, cultural immersion, and marine science. Activities include guest lectures by academics and industry experts on modern Shanghai and marine sustainable development, hands-on Chinese cultural activities (paper cutting, dragon boat racing, tai chi, traditional craft-making), a study tour to Hangzhou covering marine technology and ecological heritage, and guided visits to Shanghai's key cultural and maritime landmarks.

Who can apply

  • Citizens of all nationalities, aged 16–35 (those aged 16–18 require a guardian's letter)
  • In good health, with no history of major illness
  • Interested in Chinese culture and marine sustainable development
  • Priority given to candidates recommended by SHOU partner institutions

Scholarships

Each programme offers 20 full scholarship places for international candidates not enrolled in Chinese universities. The scholarship covers accommodation, medical insurance, course materials, and on-campus meals. Participants are responsible for their own international travel and visa application fees.
