NACA and the Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation collaborated to organise a study tour programme focused on shrimp operations in Thailand for fourteen Bangladesh officers during 29 April to 2 May 2019. The study tour was supported by the Winrock Foundation and coordinated by Dr Cherdsak, the outgoing Director General of NACA. The group met with CP Executives, DOF-Thailand and Banjong Farm in Chachoengsao Province.

This year’s International Training Course on the Biology and Pathology of Penaeid Shrimp will take place from 1-12 July at Centex Shrimp, Mahidol University, Bangkok. Tailored to those interested in doing shrimp research or learning about shrimp diseases, you will get to learn from the very best in the field about major and emerging shrimp diseases, shrimp farm management, gross inspection and molecular diagnosis of infectious shrimp diseases. You will have opportunities to try your hand in a series of practical sessions.

Fifty fellowships are available for young scientists and researchers under the ASEAN-India Research Training Fellowship Scheme (AIRTF), to study at Indian academic and R&D institutions. The fellowships are for a period of up to six months and include travel and financial support. The fellowships are intended to build capacity among young ASEAN researchers in science and technology and to further strengthen the bond between India and ASEAN member states.

The ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Lucknow, India is conducting a School on Aquatic Animal Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance from 1-6 March, 2019. Five seats are available in the school for researchers from NACA member countries (outside of India) on first-come first-served basis. Participants should be nominated by research centres participating in NACA or by member governments. Accommodation, hospitality and meals will be provided for the duration of the training. Travel grants are not available. Please apply / express interest by 13 February 2019.

FAO and NACA have signed an agreement to convene a global conference on aquaculture in 2020. This will be the fourth conference in a series that began at the dawn of the industry in Kyoto, 1976. Aquaculture 2020 will be held late in the year in China. Arrangements, programme and partner details will be announced via the NACA website in due course.

The 9th Regional Training Course on Marine Finfish Seed production and Grow-out will be held from 19-30 November 2018 in Krabi, Thailand. The course will be taught by staff of the Krabi Coastal Fisheries Research and Development Centre. Drawing on expertise throughout the region, this three-week hands-on training course will provide participants with skills in marine finfish seed production and grow-out operations, with an emphasis on groupers and Asian seabass.

The 3rd International Symposium on Aquaculture and Fisheries Education (ISAFE3), a triennial event of the Asian Fisheries Society (AFS), will be held from 16-18 May 2018 in Mumbai, India. The theme of the symposium is "Fisheries education for Sustainable Blue Economy. The symposium is being organised by the ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education in collaboration with the Indian Fisheries Association and AFS Indian Branch. Online registration is now open. Abstract submission will close on 31 March.

There are many initiatives underway which are designed to increase food supply, employment and income opportunities, most of which require considerable capital inputs. Often overlooked, are the opportunities to produce more food from the natural productivity of local ecosystems. Culture-based fisheries are one example of a relatively simple and low cost technology which can deliver nutritional and economic benefits to communities which often have few livelihood options.

The first Regional Training Course on Culture-based Fisheries will be held from 29 October to 9 November 2017 in Nha Trang, Vietnam. The course is designed to guide development professionals in the design of culture-based fisheries managed by local communities.

The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) is launching a new Certificate programme on Sustainable Asian Aquaculture via the AARM Academic programme, for one semester beginning August 2017. This certificate programme is a combination of well-designed course work and hands-on experience in specialised areas (fish/shrimp hatchery or farming). The programme is useful for both students (with credit transfer) and for working professionals and entrepreneurs (without credits).

The objectives of this project were to i) develop a guidebook in English on "Farmer-to-farmer extension approaches for small-scale aquaculture" and ii) to translate the developed guidebook into selected local dialects in Asia-Pacific and other regions (e.g. Africa). The project made use of the significant results from the JICA projects in Cambodia, Benin and other countries on farmer-to-farmer extension approaches on technology extension for small-scale farmers. The book is available in eleven languages (English, Arabic, Bahasa Indonesia, Burmese, French, Khmer, Loatian, Malay, Nepali, Thai and Vietnamese.

Culture-based fisheries (CBF) are a useful development strategy for improving the income and food security of rural communities. CBF requires minimal capital outlay, mobilising farming communities to make use of existing small dams and reservoirs for the secondary purpose of foodfish production. The objective of this project is to introduce community-based CBF to Cambodia, and to consolidate the gains of communities that have adopted CBF in Lao PDR.
