Reported Aquatic Animal Diseases in the Asia-Pacific Region during the Second Quarter of 2024

Listed below are the reported aquatic animal diseases submitted by countries in the Asia-Pacific region, which covers the second quarter of 2024.  The original and updated reports can be accessed from the QAAD page.  

Finfish Diseases

  • Infection with Aphanomyces invadans (EUS): Chinese Taipei in ayu sweetfish (Plecoglossus altivelis).
  • Infection with red seabream iridovirus (RSIV):  Chinese Taipei in seabass (Lates calcarifer), hybrid grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus x E. lanceolatus), and black porgy (Acanthopagrus schlegelii).
  • Infection with Tilapia lake virus (TiLV):  the Philippines in fingerlings of tilapia (Oreochromis sp.).
  • Grouper iridoviral disease: Chinese Taipei in hybrid grouper (E. fuscoguttatus x E. lanceolatus); and, the Philippines in juvenile groupers (Epinephelus spp.; one farm).
  • Viral encephalopathy and retinopathy (VER): Australia in farmed 1-3 kg Queensland grouper (E. lanceolatus), and farmed mulloway (Argyrosomus japonicus); and Chinese Taipei in hybrid grouper (E. fuscoguttatus x E. lanceolatus) and crimson snapper (Lutjanus erythropterus).

Molluscan Diseases

  • Infection with Abalone herpesvirus:  Australia in wild adults black-lipped abalone (Haliotis rubra).
  • Infection with Perkinsus olseni:  India in farmed and wild mussel (Perna viridis), and wild short neck clam (Paphia malabarica).
  • Infection with Marteilioides chungmuensis: Chinese Taipei in Portuguese oyster (Crassostrea angulata).

Crustacean Diseases

  • Infection with white spot syndrome virus (WSSV):  Australia in wild school prawns (Metapenaeus macleaya); Chinese Taipei in Penaeus vannamei; India in P. vannamei and P. monodon; and, the Philippines in P. vannamei (PL, grow-out culture, and adult), P. indicus (wild), P. monodon (PL and grow-out culture) and crabs (grow-out culture, adult, and wild crabs).
  • Infection with infectious myonecrosis virus: India in P. vannamei and P. monodon.
  • Acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND):  the Philippines in P. vannamei (grow-out culture), P. monodon (PL), and P. indicus (wild).
  • Hepatopancreatic microsporidiosis caused by Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (HPM-EHP):  Chinese Taipei in P. vannamei; India in P. vannamei; and, the Philippines in P. vannamei (PL and grow-out culture), P. monodon (grow-out culture) and crabs (grow-out culture).

Amphibian Diseases

  • Infection with Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis:  Australia in an unknown species of amphibian.

Other Diseases

  • India reported Infection with Tilapia parvovirus in O. niloticus.

Quarterly Aquatic Animal Disease Report

The Quarterly Aquatic Animal Disease report provides information about the status of aquatic animal disease in 21 participating states in the Asia-Pacific region. The diseases covered in the report are reviewed annually by the Asia Regional Advisory Group on Aquatic Animal Health. The report was first published in the second quarter of 1998. It is a joint activity between NACA, FAO and the OIE Regional Representation (Tokyo).
